Welcome to the League of Silent Flight Australia. This website offers information about the LSF, the LSF Proficiency scheme, competition results, impending events, articles about gliding, photos and stories that can make the whole experience of flying gliders even more enjoyable.
If you have any photos/ stories/ articles feel free to email them to us here
What is LSF Australia?
LSF Australia was formed in 1978 to promote the sport/hobby of radio-controlled glider flying. LSF Australia was formed as an affiliate of LSF USA. The LSF US website is here
If you're into competitive flying, gliders can be flown under several categories; Thermal, Scale, Slope, F3B, F3J, HLG, 2M, Scale Soaring and F3F. For a comprehensive list of competition categories and rules for contests go to the FAI website here.
The League of Silent Flight (LSF) is a USA based organisation dedicated to the promotion of all forms of model gliding and soaring. There are currently active LSF Chapters in many parts of the world including Australia.
The Australian Chapter has been running for over 25 years. A major activity that the LSF promotes is the personal flight proficiency achievement scheme. This is a series of flying tasks aimed at all levels that encourages participants to extend their flying abilities. More information can be found in the Level Forms section of this website.
The LSF Australia also runs a number of competitions throughout the year. These consist of postal competitions and also the Jerilderie Tournament, arguably Australia's finest thermal soaring event.
Historically, the LSF Australia published three newsletters each year and printed and posted these. With the advent of the Internet as a viable alternative and with a view to cutting costs, these newsletters will be published here on this website in .PDF format.
These are a valuable source of information and the content of these largely depend on you the regular modeller; we would be happy to publish your articles on just about anything to do with gliding; from the merits of 3 vs 5 pt curve adjustment for elevator/crow mixes to the pros and cons of 150m lines for Open Thermal contests.
The LSF Australia is continually trying to broaden its base of activities and interests for the benefit of Australia's model glider flyers. This includes promoting flying activities, sharing a large knowledge base and liaising with national and state bodies regarding gliding matters.
Bendigo Report
The weather was perfect, blue skies and very little wind.
At times the lift was easy and the whole group went up, but there were also heats that were very tricky and many pilots re-launched or found “get out of jail” cards really low.
We had 15 pilots. So the competition was very healthy. We even had Carl Strautins make the trip down from Sydney. He flew his 70’s inspired ICON, Sorry Joe W, But I just can’t believe how thick that centre section is….
Also Garry and Darrel made the long drive from Mildura, cheers guys….
A big very big thank you goes to Terry for organizing the field and the weather. Also the great job of CD’ing the boys. We managed to fly 6 rounds comfortably and drop 1.
Regards, Theo.
